Miss E. Woodward was the owner of a lovely tooled leather album, containing 37 cartes de visite, all taken in England (most in Cheltenham, but Brighton and Worcester are also represented). I surmise that she arrived in Nova Scotia sometime in the 1870s, perhaps as a bride, and that the album was put together by her friends and family in the Old Country as a keepsake. It's impossible to know if the order and placement of photographs is significant (if facing photographs are related in some particular way), but it's a good guess that they are, given the supposed Victorian penchant for sentimentality. In any case, it's a remarkable document, with a quite different feel from the albums of born-and-bred Nova Scotians.
