There used to be a science of anthropometry, not so very distant from phrenology, which classified people's head shapes as "dolichocephalic" and so on (see Wikipedia on 'cephalic index' for more). Portraits show some of that variability, though it's perilous to read anything into the landscape of variety ...isn't it?
